Jennifer Mahlman

"Anatomy of a Corset," drypoint on Somerset satin,
digital transfer and relief on Thai Mulberry, sepia mylar

This print explores the way that fashion reforms and reshapes the structure of the human body both physically and psychologically. As the popular silhouette of fashion shifts, so do the physical and psychological demands placed on the human body to meet the aesthetically popular ideal of the time. Technically this print also reflects our tendency as artists to explore and assimilate new (and often commercial) technology and techniques into our creative repertoire. Just as the popular silhouette of fashion is changing at a continually accelerating rate, so is the technology that influences the way we conceive and execute our own aesthetic and creative work.
