![]() "Vertical Hold," photo-screenprint |
|
My first instinct in symbolizing the relationship between humans and technology was to show the fearful messages of the tv screen. The title of my print "Vertical Hold" is a metaphor for the "hold" or trance the tv monitor has on us. We are all caught by it, yet unaware of its long term effects. The old religious reference of TV as Satan also inspired me to make the image. I generated the final image from these elements: I appropriated an old wood engraving by Collin de Plancy called Dictionnaire Infernal, 1863. Used several filters in Photoshop to get the effect I wanted. I also created the vertical roll in Photoshop. I then imported it to Freehand where I created the symbolic and simplistic TV. I then produced the three screen separations and transferred them to the screenprinting medium. The image is comprised of three color runs on Rives Heavyweight grey. Seemingly simple choices, but the paper and ink colors had to be right for the image. |
